The importance of the land


The land is what we use to live. Through out history people have depended upon the land to live. In the book Cry the Beloved Country, Kumalo the main character speaks of the land. It is so important, this is how the novel begins. I believe the way an author starts a book shows a glimpse at how the how book is going to be, along with how the author feels about the topic which he or she has chosen.
"There is a lovely road that runs into Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it. The road climbs seven miles into them, to Carisbrooke; and from there, if there is no mist, you look down on one of the fairest valleys of Africa." Alan Paton paints a picture of the land in which he loves. Something many people have a hard time doing, he does it as though he is looking out at the land right at that moment.
